Alberta goes undefeated to win gold at U16 Western Challenge

Alberta capped off a perfect week at the Football Canada U16 Western Challenge with the gold medal.

Alberta ended the tournament undefeated with a 3-0 record after after earning a 28-0 shutout victory over British Columbia.

Manitoba claimed the silver medal after defeating Saskatchewan 33-8.  Manitoba completed the Challenge with a 2-1 record while Saskatchewan won the bronze medal with a 1-2 mark.

British Columbia was winless but ended up in fourth place with 0-3 record.

ALBERTA 33, BRITISH COLUMBIA 8:

Ajou Ajou scored two touchdowns in the first half to guide Alberta to the victory.

On the last play of the first quarter, Ajou sprinted into the end zone for an 18 yard touchdown.

With six seconds left in the first half, quarterback Eli Hetlinger connected with Ajou for a 12 yard major.

At halftime, Alberta led British Columbia 14-0.

In the third quarter, Kolby Hurford added a 23 yard touchdown for Alberta.

Players of the Game for Alberta were REC Ajou (offence) and DL Adrian Minakata Mata (defence).  British Columbia Players of the Game were RB Christian Carlon Diaz (offence) and LB Jude Buchanan (defence).

MANITOBA 33, SASKATCHEWAN 8:

Kaiden Bannon tallied two majors to help Manitoba secure the win.

In the opening quarter, Jackson Milton-Owens field goal attempt went wide to the back of the end zone to give Saskatchewan a 1-0 lead.

Quarterback Carter Kutzan found his way into the end zone for a three yard major.

After Saskatchewan conceded a safety to Manitoba, Kutzan connected with Bannon for a 75 yard touchdown pass to increase the team’s lead.

At halftime, Manitoba held a 19-1 lead over Saskatchewan.

Manitoba would continue their scoring in the second half as Matthew Saccino had a 99 yard touchdown reception and Bannon added a seven yard major.

Ryker Frank rushed into the end zone for Saskatchewan’s lone touchdown in the second half.

Players of the Game for Manitoba were QB Kutzan (offence) and DL Ethan Papineau (defence). Saskatchewan’s Players of the Game were quarterback Noah Pelletier (offence) and DL Wyley Marcinkiw (defence).
