To cap off the first day of action at the 2015 Football Canada Cup on Monday July 13, defending champion Ontario defeated host Quebec-white 26-3 at Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu’s Alphonse-Desjardins Stadium.

Ontario opened the scoring with a 34-yard Gabriel Siemieniec field goal attempt which missed wide left. Quebec conceded the single to put Ontario on the board 1-0. Quebec’s defence forced the Ontario field goal following a second down sack by Xavier Ouellet.

Quebec-white responded with a 31-yard field goal by Vincent Blanchard, pulling ahead 3-1.

Quebec’s lead was not safe for long as Ontario responded to begin the 2nd quarter as Siemieniec atoned for his earlier miss by connecting on a 43-yard field goal.

Ontario continued to roll as Jevante Stanley momentarily silenced the hometown crowd with an 83-yard touchdown run.

Stanley would add a second rushing touchdown on the day, this time from 33 yards out to increase Ontario’s lead 18-3.

A 3-yard Dominic Mandalfino rushing touchdown and a Gabriel Siemieniac rouge made the final score 26-3.

Team Ontario veteran Jevante Stanley had an outstanding day rushing for 262 yards on 13 carries and 2 touchdowns.

Ontario will now play Alberta in the first semi-final on Thursday July 16 at 4 p.m ET while Quebec-Blue faces Saskatchewan at 7 p.m.

Quotes:

“I thought we were pretty sloppy coming out of the gate. I was pleased with our performance in the second half. I thought the kids really concentrated, checked in and played a really solid second half.

On Jevante Stanley’s performance:

“Special player. He’s a pleasure to coach. He works extremely hard; he comes in every day and works. We definitely named him captain for that reason. He’s back again this year after he was dynamite last year. He’s a tremendous leader.”

On Ontario matchup against Alberta:

“I watched them this morning and they have a solid running game. We’re going to have to be better than we were the first half. I think if we execute and do what we do, we’ll be ok.”

-Glen Mills, Ontario Head Coach

“Today’s game was really tough, we got beat up front. We couldn’t counter their power play and Jevante with his cutbacks; he had a good game on us. What I liked from my team is the fight. We didn’t quit; we kept fighting until the end. That’s something we can keep working on. We have two more games to play and if we play the way we finished this game, we’ll be alright.”

On playing in front of the hometown crowd:

“It was fun. We play because we love playing football but it’s always fun to play in front of a big crowd. It’s fun for the kids and it’s nice to have the support that they got today. I’m sure they wish they had a better result but it was fun to see all the people out there encouraging us.”

-Fabrice Raymond, Quebec-white Head Coach
