FCC2018: Quebec overpowers Ontario to win bronze medal

by footballcanada

After their reign as national champions ended, Quebec rebounded in a big ways and crushed Ontario 33-6 in the bronze medal game at the 2018 Football Canada Cup in Calgary, Alberta’s Shouldice Park.

Ontario wound up fourth in the tournament.

Tiemoko Sanogo opened the scoring with a touchdown reception for Quebec at 7:43 of the first quarter.

With a minute remaining in the quarter, Ontario responded back when Liam Cousineau dashed into the end zone for a rushing major.

Xavier Lacoste would add two field goals to increase Quebec’s points total over Ontario.

At halftime, Quebec led Ontario 15-8.

Damien Alford tallied a passing major for Quebec in the third quarter.  Later that frame, Gabriel Loiselle would give Quebec the insurance they needed to win the bronze with a touchdown reception.

Offensive Players of the Game were Anthony Renaud (Quebec) and Ryan Licandro (Ontario).  Defensive Players of the Game were Yshad-Shane Benjamin (Quebec) and Scott Nichols (Ontario).

“I’m extremely proud of the kids on offence, defence and special teams,” commented Quebec Head Coach Marco Iadeluca.  “I think we ran away from our running game a little bit.”

“The defence was outstanding.”

For their part, Ontario couldn’t overcome discipline issues and a strong Quebec squad.

“In the first half, we played tremendously,” said Ontario Head Coach Glen Mills.  “On offence, we spoiled a couple of opportunities.”

“They broke open a couple of plays and they have some dynamic guys over there. We sputtered and we had a little frustration as we had penalties we shouldn’t have taken.”
