Flag football events coming to Waterloo, Ontario and Vancouver, BC

by footballcanada

Vancouver, British Columbia and Waterloo, Ontario will be hosting Football Canada’s 2017 flag football events this August.

Waterloo to host Senior Flag

The University of Waterloo will be hosting the Senior Flag Football Nationals in addition to the U16 Eastern Flag Football Challenge, August 4-6.

Senior Flag to feature Team Canada

The Senior Flag Football Nationals will feature adult men’s and women’s teams from across Canada. For the first time, the field will also include Canada’s Flag Football National Teams. The tournament will not only provide national bragging rights but will be used to identify and prepare athletes for international competition.

“The senior flag nationals are a chance for Canada’s top men’s and women’s players to showcase their talent as well as compete against the current national team,” said Aaron Geisler, manager of development, Football Canada.

“With so many great players in one location, it’s an opportunity for our national team program to identify players that could be added to improve our roster heading into international competition. It’s also an opportunity for our current national teams to come together and get some meaningful reps against Canada’s best.”

Under-18 event heads to west coast

The University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus will play host to the Under-18 Flag Football National Championships as well as the U16 Western Flag Football Challenge from August 10-14.

The U18 flag nationals will feature men’s and women’s provincial teams from across Canada, including first time participant New Brunswick. This summer also marks a milestone for BC as the province will host a flag national championship for the first time.

“Flag football is thriving and growing in British Columbia which was demonstrated by the fact that there were two thousand participants at the 2016 provincial flag championships,” said Frank Naso, president of the BC Provincial Football Association. “We’ve had some success at past flag nationals and are excited about bringing the event to BC for the first time.”

Inaugural under-16 regional challenges

Waterloo and Vancouver will also play host the inaugural Eastern and Western Flag Football Challenges. The creation of these U16 regional events help better align Football Canada’s competitions with its Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) plan as recommended in the sport’s competition review.

“The competition review identified a need to create regional competitions at the U16 level in Canada. These events provide a consistent starting point for athletes, coaches and officials to develop as they work towards national championships and ultimately international competition,” said Aaron Geisler, manager of development, Football Canada. “These regional events promote player development while participants gain experience in tournament-style competition against top teams from neighbouring provinces.”
