B.C GRABS BRONZE WITH WIN OVER NOVA SCOTIA

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – After a ten year absence from the Canada Cup dating back to 2000 when they last participated, Team B.C. captured a bronze medal in this year’s Under-18 Football Canada Cup.

With twenty four points scored on turnovers, B.C. improved their tournament record to 2-1 with a dominating 38-3 win over host Team Nova Scotia. Losing only to gold medal contender Saskatchewan, Team B.C. outscored their opponents 65-21 in their last two games.

Desmond Bassi scored a 10 yard touchdown on a Carson Williams pass that capped a 4 play, 25 yard drive which was kick started by a Tyler Fong B.C. interception.

B.C.’s Nick Naylor was good with all five convert attempts and added an eleven yard field goal.  Nova Scotia’s Jeremy Ford nailed a 32 yard field goal late in the second quarter.

Opening the second quarter, Team B.C. put together an eight play, 91 yard drive that was ended by a Stephen Spagnuolo’s two yard dive into the end zone giving B.C. a 17-0 lead into the intermission.

Ford’s field goal on the opening drive of the second half was the first and last points for Nova Scotia, as B.C. pushed the lead to 24-3 on Spagnuolo’s second major of the day on a nine yard rush.

Seven more points were added to the B.C. total on a Jesse Mills’ fumble recovery in the end zone by B.C. linebacker Casey Chin. The final touchdown of the day was scored by a Cam Bedore rush of eight yards, completing a 68 yard drive that started on a fumble recovery by Roberto Perizzolo following a sack of second string pivot Nick Hunsley by Taylor Harrison.

Capitalizing on turnovers was the key for the Team B.C. victory. B.C. had 20 first downs compared to Nova Scotia’s 11, but total offensive output was similar with Nova Scotia’s 255 yards measuring up to 261 posted by B.C.

Nova Scotia’s Andreas Robinson had a game high 94 yards on ten rushes. Stephen Spagnuolo faired with 12 carries for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

B.C. quarterback Carson Williams was effective with 130 yards in passing on seven completions.  Desmond Bassi added 51 yards on three receptions and one touchdown.

Nova Scotia’s fourth place finish was their first finish of a Canada Cup tournament since their last appearance in 2005.
