N.S. FAILS TO CONVERT TURNOVER OPPORTUNITIES AGAINST ONTARIO EAST

The first game of the final day featured Nova Scotia and Ontario East, battling on the consolation side of the 2011 Football Canada Cup draw. Pride and seeding for next year’s Football Canada Cup were on the line in the 7th place game.
Ontario East opened the scoring on a 11-yard sweep by running back Nicholas Morassut. Ontario East increased their lead to 14 when defensive back, Harrison daCosta stepped in front of an attempted hitch screen, returning the pass 38-yards for a touchdown.
After a failed 3rd and goal by Nova Scotia, the next play the defense was able to force a fumble by Ontario East’s, Derek Pisani which was recovered by Taylor Macdonald on the 15-yard line. Nova Scotia was unable to get their offense in gear, leading to a second unconverted 3rd and goal.
With 5 minutes remaining, Nova Scotia’s Adam Melanson recorded a sack on first down, and on second down tackled QB Duncan Lurie for a loss on a bad exchange.
With 1:45 left to play in the final quarter, Nova Scotia recovered a Nicholas Morassut fumble– down 14-0, inside the 30-yard line. After converting a 3rd and 4 to Andrew Klain, Nova Scotia quarterback Matthew Shannon threw an interception to John Biewald which he returned 53-yards. Following the interception, Duncan Lurie connected with Danny Vandervoort for a 54-yard gain which set up a 3-yard running score by #21 Nicholas Morassut. The game was closer than the 0 to 20 final score would indicate.
