SASKATCHEWAN MAKES FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACK AGAINST NOVA SCOTIA IN GAME 5 OF THE FCC

In the opening game of the second day of the 2011 Football Canada Cup, Nova Scotia faced Saskatchewan– both looking for their first win on the consolation side. Saskatchewan scored at 1:27 of the first quarter on a 17-yard run by Saskatchewan quarterback Noah Picton on a naked bootleg. Nova Scotia replied on a 42-yard play action pass from Matthew Shannon to Jordan Koch who beat the Saskatchewan secondary in a footrace on the near sideline to notch the game up at 7. Nova Scotia widened the lead on a 4-yard pass from Matthew Shannon to defensive lineman Adam Melanson, in on a goal line package who stretched out to make the catch and secured his feet in bounds to give them a 14-7 lead.

Saskatchewan began their comeback with 3 and a half minutes to play in the 3rd quarter on a 31-yard field goal from Dylan Chadwick to narrow the lead to 14-10. Nova Scotia scored to go up 21-10 with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Shannon to Cody Cluett with 11:34 in the final quarter.

Saskatchewan replied with a 6-yard touchdown run by running back, Brandin Cannon with 2:53 in the 4th quarter against an injury depleted Nova Scotia defensive front. Late in the fourth quarter with 1:42 left to play, Saskatchewan forced a turnover, a fumble recovered by #47 Wilfred Jerome. Quarterback Jared Andreychuk hit Jaeden Marwick on a 39-yard pass to set up a first and goal. Running back Brandin Cannon punched it in from the 7-yard line to put Saskatchewan ahead for the first time since the opening quarter. Nova Scotia’s Matthew Shannon was intercepted by Saskatchewan’s #21 Ryan Filyk with 17.5 seconds to play, sealing the Saskatchewan come-from-behind victory.  Saskatchewan plays the winner of game 6 between Ontario East and Manitoba while Nova Scotia faces the loser.
