Michael Calvert is a quarterback from Delta, British Columbia who will be competing at the 2018 International Bowl in Arlington, Texas this upcoming January as a member of the National Under-18 team.

The pivot’s gridiron career began in 2007.

“It was my first time playing flag football,” recounted Calvert.  “My dad is really into football so he gave the little nudge I needed to go start playing.”

Among the teams the offensive standout has played for include community squad South Delta Rams and South Delta Sun Devils of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BCHSFA).

The highlight of Calvert’s career has been winning his first provincial championship when he was in Grade 9 with the Rams.

“That was a pretty big moment for me winning for the first time,” he added.

This past July, Calvert represented Team British Columbia at the 2017 Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

“It was eye opening, realizing how much commitment you need to have in the sport and how much you need to love it,” reflected the offensive standout of his experience at the tournament.  “I thought it was great though playing all the top end competition down there.”

When Calvert learned that he made the National Under-18 team, there was a sense of pride that all his hard work finally paid off.

“It’s truly an honour being named as one of the top players in Canada,” he expressed.  “Going down to represent us is truly an honour.”

“The competition level is another step up from the Football Canada Cup and it’s going to be fun.”

On the field, the British Columbia quarterback tries to emulate New England Patriots great Tom Brady.

“I think about how he carries himself on and off the field in football and in other activities,” Calvert elaborated.  “He’s a really good role model to have.”
