Mental mistakes prove costly for New Brunswick in FCC12 game 6 vs. Ontario East
After rushing out to an early seven point lead, turnovers and penalties proved costly for New Brunswick who could not climb out of an early deficit, dropping a 38-10 contest against Ontario East in game 6 of the 2012 Football Canada Cup hosted by the Ontario Football Alliance (OFA) at TD Waterhouse Stadium on the campus of Western University in London, Ontario.
Playing in just their second Canada Cup game since the 2002 tournament in Ottawa, New Brunswick’s first 2012 tournament win looked promising early. After stopping Ontario East’s opening possession, New Brunswick opened the scoring on a huge 83-yard Fred Hammond touchdown run. Hammond tallied 94-yards on the ground in the opening quarter finishing the day with a game high 125 rushing yards.
Ontario East tied the game with the opening quarter winding down on a Kaleb Scott sweep. The teams traded fumble recoveries on back-to-back plays until a 2-yard rushing touchdown by running back, Pelle Jorgen gave Ontario East a 14-7 advantage.
Ontario East recovered its second NB fumble of the day at their opponents 24. Quarterback, George Papadakos wasted little time, finding receiver, Malcolm Carter on a 19-yard strike to increase the Ontario East lead to 14.
Another big reception by Carter along the sidelines set up an Ontario East first and goal. Running back, Andrew Smith scored on a 3-yard rushing touchdown increasing the Ontario East lead 21-14 after a NB offside penalty netted Ontario East a fresh set of downs.
Towards the end of the half, a Jason Johnson end zone interception took away an Ontario East scoring opportunity.
An electric 63-yard punt return for a touchdown by local London Junior Mustangs product D’Sean Thewell ended the first half with Ontario East up 35-7.
A 21-yard Domagala field goal with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter increased the Ontario East lead 38-7.
Midway through the final quarter New Brunswick recorded its second interception on the day, this time by defensive back, Vince Boucher. In the final minute, a 28-yard Alex White field goal supplied the game last scoring play to make the final score 38-10.
New Brunswick will now face Manitoba to open Saturday’s action at 10 am ET while Ontario East will face Nova Scotia in the 5th place game.
