New champion to be crowned in WWCFL playoffs

For the first time in league history there will be a new champion in the Western Women’s Canadian Football League (WWCFL) after the Regina Riot edged four-time defending champion Saskatoon Valkryies 31-29 in the Prairie Conference final on Sunday afternoon in Regina.

Regina’s opponent, the Edmonton Storm punched their ticket to the final by defeating the Calgary Rage in the Western Conference final on Saturday afternoon.

Investor’s Group Field in Winnipeg will play host to the WWCFL championship game on Saturday, July 4 at 2 p.m. local time.

The WWCFL kicked off during the spring of 2011 following the inaugural IFAF Women’s World Championship held in July 2010. The other primary avenues for women to play tackle football in Canada are the Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) which is comprised of four teams throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as well as the Montreal Blitz which play against U.S. competition in the Independent Women’s Football League. Both have been running for a considerable amount of time as the Blitz were founded in 2001 while the MWFL began in 2004.
