Football Canada unveils Regina, Saskatchewan as host of the inaugural Senior Women’s National Championship, July 28-31, 2016 at Mosaic Stadium.

The organization of the 2016 Senior Women’s National Championship will be led by the Regina Riot football club in collaboration with Football Saskatchewan and Football Canada.

The event hosts provincial tackle football teams from across Canada and builds off the 2012 Women’s Challenge Cup held in Montreal. The Challenge Cup hosted provincial teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and Atlantic Canada in a week-long celebration of women’s football which included integrated practices, mini-games as well as development opportunities for mentor coaches.

While provinces battle for the title of national champion, the 2016 women’s nationals will also serve as the start of the identification process for Canada’s Women’s National Team, scheduled to compete at the 2017 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Women’s World Championship (WWC).

Canada won a pair of silver medals at the inaugural 2010 WWC in Sweden and 2013 WWC in Finland.

Quotes:

“The inaugural Women’s World Championship in 2010 served as a major catalyst for the growth of women’s tackle football in Canada. We’re excited to support this continued growth with a senior women’s tackle football national championship in 2016.”

– Shannon Donovan, executive director, Football Canada

“Having served as head coach of the 2013 Women’s National Team along with the Saskatoon Valkyries of the WWCFL, I’ve seen first-hand the tremendous passion that exists for women’s tackle football in this country. The creation of a true national championship for women’s tackle football is really exciting because it will allow Canada’s top athletes an opportunity to compete against one another for the first time. This showcase also provides us with an opportunity to identify the top 100 players from across the country [for our national team] and gives players a chance to demonstrate how our sport is growing and improving.”

– Jeff Yausie, head coach, Women’s National Team
