TEAM CANADA SET TO TAKE ON THE WORLD AT THE 2010 IFAF WWC

OTTAWA, CANADA – June 26, 2010 – The world’s best female Football players have converged on Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden for the inaugural International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Women’s World Championship running from June 26 to July 4.  The Championship will kick off for Canada on Sunday, June 27 when they take on host team Sweden. On Canada Day, Thursday, July 1st, Canada will take the field against the women’s national team from Germany. The top teams in each group will meet in the IFAF Women’s World Championship Gold Medal Game on Saturday, July 3 following the Bronze Medal and fifth place games. While Canada is ranked second heading into the tournament, teams from the USA, Germany, Austria, Finland, and Sweden are also taking part in the championship. Seeding for the six nations, established by data recorded in the 2009 IFAF Benchmarking Study. Teams have been divided into two groups:

Earlier this spring, regional camps were held in Saskatoon, SK, and Oromocto, NB. The final training camp took place in Saint John, NB before the team arrived in Sweden. The national team boasts representatives from each selection camp- 21 players come from the MWFL, 5 from the Montreal Blitz (of the IWFL), 2 from the Calgary Rage, 6 from the Edmonton Storm and 2 from Saskatoon.
There players are very excited to get their international careers started. “I’m not only playing the game I love but on a team with my country’s name spread across the front of my sweater,” Belle Wighton said. “It doesn’t get much better.”
Head Coach Larry Harlow, the co-founder of New Brunswick Women’s Football League, the New Brunswick Jr. Girls Football League and the Maritime Women’s Football League, will lead the national team into Sweden. He is currently the Head Coach of the Saint John Storm, a team he has transformed from last place into the Maritime Champions. “Team Canada faced every type of weather condition in preparing for worlds,” Coach Harlow said. “The players have bonded and are ready for their next journey. Coaches delivered a quality program and we are ready.”
The coaching staff also includes Francois Bougie (offensive line), Josh Sacobie (Quarterbacks), Rick Sowieta (linebackers), Tannis Wilson (defensive line), Jim Mather (offensive coordinator and receivers), Marcus Fitzgerald (running backs) and Craig Bachynski (defensive coordinator and defensive backs). The team will be accompanied by Shannon Donovan, the GM, Bill Murphy, the equipment manager along with the trainers Michelle and Eric Duchene.
