New Brunswick beats Ontario Black 43-24 to claim 7th place in the 2024 U18 Women’s National Championship

July 28, 2024, Fredericton, NB – In a thrilling 7th place playoff match at the 2024 U18 Women’s National Championship, host team New Brunswick secured a decisive 43-24 victory over Ontario Black at BMO Centre in Fredericton, NB, on Sunday morning.

The game was a tale of two halves, with New Brunswick dominating the first half before Ontario Black mounted a spirited comeback attempt in the second. This victory marks a positive end to the tournament for New Brunswick (1-3), while Ontario Black finishes the championship at 0-4.

New Brunswick set the tone early, with Alexia Brazeau scoring on runs of 34 and 94 yards in the first quarter. Combined with a safety, this gave New Brunswick a commanding 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Ontario Black’s lone score in the opening frame came from a 44-yard touchdown run by Braylyn Hawthorne-Harper.

The second quarter saw New Brunswick extend their lead further. Jana McAllister’s 26-yard touchdown run and Alexia Brazeau’s 1-yard score pushed the halftime score to 28-6.

New Brunswick continued their dominance in the third quarter, with Alexia Brazeau adding two more touchdown runs of 5 and 29 yards, extending the lead to 43-6.

Ontario Black showed resilience in the fourth quarter, with quarterback Omnia Hoque connecting with Paige Ryce for three touchdown passes of 59, 37, and 16 yards. However, the comeback fell short as time expired.

Alexia Brazeau was the standout performer for New Brunswick, rushing for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns on 22 carries. Jana McAllister added 126 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts.

This result marks an improvement for New Brunswick from their 5th-place finish in the 2023 championship
