Coach Developer Pathway
and Requirements
A guide to understanding and progressing to become a Coach Developer
In order to run your own clinics, evaluate coaches, and supervise other coaches, you must first take the proper training to become a Coach Developer (CD). An NCCP Coach Developer is an experienced coach trained to develop, support, and challenge coaches in training.
Types of Coach Developers
There are three types of Coach Developers:
- NCCP Learning Facilitator: Train the coaches to coach at all levels.
- Every NCCP workshop is led by a qualified NCCP Learning Facilitator (LF) who has undergone nationally standardized training. NCCP Learning Facilitators have the appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitudes to facilitate learning sessions that produce skilled and knowledgeable coaches.
- Through a competency-based approach, NCCP Learning Facilitators ensure the coaches they train can be certified on their ability to create safe environments for happy participants. NCCP Learning Facilitators also contribute to the sport community as ambassadors for the NCCP.
- NCCP Coach Evaluator: Evaluate coaches and guide them to certification
- Coach Evaluators step in once a coach has completed their NCCP training.
- NCCP Coach Evaluators assess, evaluate, debrief, and follow up with coaches to help them achieve certification. They are experts in observation, providing feedback and debriefing, and have in-depth knowledge of the outcomes, criteria, and evidences from NCCP standard evaluation tools within different sport contexts. NCCP Coach Evaluators also act as ambassadors for the NCCP and as resources for coaches who seek to augment and validate their coaching abilities.
- NCCP Master Coach Developer: Train, mentor & evaluate Coach Developers
- NCCP Master Coach Developers select, train, evaluate, support, and mentor NCCP Coach Developers (Learning Facilitators, Coach Evaluators, and other Master Coach Developers).
- NCCP Master Coach Developers have the knowledge and expertise in facilitation to lead workshops and professional development experiences for Coach Developers. It is expected that NCCP Master Coach Developers take on more responsibility during workshops and evaluations by supporting NCCP Coach Developers, program administrators, and delivery host agencies. NCCP Master Coach Developers also act as ambassadors for the NCCP.
STEPS TO BECOMING A COACH DEVELOPER
- The first step in becoming a Coach Developer is taking the Make Ethical Decisions module.
- Then follow the 4-step pathway as laid out by the CAC.
Step 1: CORE TRAINING
Done through your local PTCR (Provincial/Territorial Coaching Representatives), this provides NCCP Coach Developers with the skills to perform their role. See the calendar of upcoming training opportunities.
Find your PTCR here.
Step 2: CONTENT-SPECIFIC TRAINING
Content-Specific Training is different for both Learning Facilitators and Coach Evaluators. This includes relevant sport or multi-sport training, as well as micro-facilitation and/or micro-evaluation for an opportunity to practice delivery with peers.
For Learning Facilitators:
- You must have taken the course you wish to be a Learning Facilitator for.
- You must take either the Community Novice Coach LF Training Workshop or Competition Introduction Football Position Coach LF Training Workshop. Talk to your PSO coaching representative to get this accomplished in The Locker.
For Coach Evaluators:
- You must take a Competition Evaluation CE Training Course.
Step 3: CO-DELIVERY
New NCCP Coach Developers can practice with real coaches alongside an experienced Coach Developer. NCCP Coach Developers are considered “trained” when they’ve completed the first three steps of the pathway.
If you meet the standards of the co-delivery, you can now run a course by yourself!
Step 4: CERTIFICATION & EVALUATION
Trained Coach Developers can deliver NCCP courses, but it is recommended that organizations use certified Coach Developers before using trained Coach Developers. We highly recommend all Coach Developers become certified within 2 years of completing training.
How do you get certified? To become certified, you must be evaluated by a Master Coach Developer. This is a quality assurance step to ensure that the NCCP is delivered to the same national standard no matter where training occurs.
