Football Canada announces champions of the 2024 Football Canada Elite Flag Nationals
May 19th, Kingston, ON – The inaugural champions of the Football Canada Elite Flag Nationals were crowned on Sunday, May
Our national flag football tournament, with provincial teams competing against each other for the championship across 4 age groups.
Established in 2007 as the Flag Football National Championships have provided athletes with a platform to develop their skills and compete at an elite level, paving the way for opportunities on the national team programs.
The tournament has evolved over the years to reflect the growth of flag football and Football Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model. In 2010, Under-18 (U18) divisions were introduced, followed by a major shift in 2011 when the under-15 co-ed division was replaced with separate boys’ and girls’ Under-16 (U16) divisions. By 2013, the championship featured three divisions: male and female U16, along with a female U18 division, providing distinct pathways for young athletes to develop their game.
In 2017, the introduction of the U16 Regional Flag Challenge allowed Flag Nationals to shift its focus to an Under-18 format, featuring both male and female divisions. Most recently, in 2023, the U16 and U18 divisions merged to form the Elite Flag Nationals, which also introduced a U14 division to further expand opportunities for younger athletes. This unified tournament streamlines competition, creates a clearer pathway for athletes aiming for Olympic participation, and celebrates flag football as one of the fastest-growing sports in North America.
