Description

USA Football’s national teams defeated Canada four games to two at the 2016 International Bowl series which took place January 31 to February 5 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. This year marks the first in three that USA Football will keep the International Bowl trophy as Canada won the series in both 2014 and 2015. The series is a collaboration of the sport’s national governing bodies in each country – USA Football and Football Canada – featuring top student-athletes in football’s greatest annual international competition. Canada’s national teams left the tournament with a 2-1 record aided by a strong performance from the under-18 national team which remains undefeated in international play with a perfect 4-0 record. To open the series on Sunday January 31, Football Canada’s under-19 national team fell to a strong U.S. national team 33-0. Canada’s under-18 national team, chosen from participants of the under-18 national tackle football championship, the Football Canada Cup, avenged the opening game’s loss by defeating the U.S. U19 Selects 31-13. On Wednesday February 3, Canada’s under-18 national team continued their hot streak as they shut out the U.S. under-18 national team 24-0. The win marked the third consecutive year that Canada’s U18s defeated their neighbours to the south’s in the International Bowl’s under-18 national team contest. Canada went into the final day of action on Friday February 5 with a 2-1 lead over the U.S., needing a single victory to secure a tie or two to win the 2016 International Bowl series outright. Friday’s games featured a triple header between provincial teams from Alberta and Ontario, taking on U.S. national teams. Following back-to-back losses to Canada’s U18 national team, Team USA replied in a big way by sweeping all three of Friday’s games. Alberta’s U16 squad opened the day with a 43-6 loss at the hands U.S. under-16 national team. Ontario was unable to answer back for Canada, falling 34-3 and 49-7 against the U18 U.S. Selects and U.S. U17 national team, respectively.
