Cayenne wins the battle of the undefeated; wins National Championship over Monarchs
KAMLOOPS (July 2, 2024) – In a battle of the undefeated, Cayenne was able to cap off a fabulous tournament with a 34-13 victory over the Monarchs on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon in Kamloops, BC.
After the defense won the first few opening possessions, the Monarchs were able to open the scoring on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Emmanuelle Bronsard to Marianne Quirion. Cayenne was able to respond right back with a touchdown and 1-pt convert to Clara Beaudoin. Their defense would then get a stop on 3rd down and goal and their offense would march down the field and finish off the drive with a Mathilde Renaud touchdown. Cayenne capped off the first half with a triple quarterback play, which had Sandrine Gobeil-Huot receive the initial snap, throwback to Clara Beaudoin, who then threw to Annie Tyers-Lagacé, then back to Gobeil-Huot who finally hit Tyers-Lagacé down the sideline for the touchdown and a 21-6 lead going into halftime. Monarch’s explosive offensive was unable to get the big plays needed to swing the momentum but did generate another touchdown to Marianne Quirion. Cayenne would then put the game away with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Émilie Papillon to secure the 34-13 victory.
In Bronze Medal action, Sweet Heat’s offence was on fire in the 2nd half and beat Regina 47-33 and capture the Bronze Medal. The score was close for most of the game with Sweet Heat holding a slim 20-13 lead at halftime. Their defense was able to get the stops when needed and quarterback Christine Eberle was able to complete 6 touchdown passes, with 4 of them to Olivia Gordon. Abigail Chupa had a strong game for Regina and Brenna Metz kept Regina in the game with 3 touchdowns and 3 1-pt conversations, but Regina was just unable to close the gap down the stretch.
Earlier in the day during the semi-finals, Sweet Heat managed to score early on Cayenne, with two touchdowns by Olivia Gordon, but the Cayenne defense held Sweet Heat scoreless the rest of the way. A pair of touchdowns by Mathilde Renaud and two interceptions by their defense helped Cayenne earn their spot in the final with a 33-13 victory.
In the other semi-final, the defense of the Monarchs stepped up big during their matchup against Regina with 5 interceptions, with 3 of them by Océanne Samson. Offensively Anne-Frédérique Tardif led the Monarchs with 2 touchdowns and 3 1-pt converts with Mégane Simard picking up 2 of her own and Frédérique Morneau, Marianne Quirion, and Abygael Beauregard chipping in one each. After going up big 34-6 at halftime, the Monarchs would cruise to a 48-6 win to reach the Gold Medal game.
Capping off the consolation games, EZ-E and West Coast Reign ended their tournaments with victories. EZ-E would beat the BC Storm 37-18 to start the day and then concluded the tournament with a 26-6 win over MVP Sniper. MVP Sniper secured the 35-0 victory over West Coast Reign 35-0 before falling to EZ-E. In the final consolation game of the tournament, West Coast Reign would pick up their first win of the tournament, a 37-18 win over the BC Storm.
