Five teams undefeated after Day 1 at Canadian Collegiate Flag Football Championship

MONTREAL (May 3, 2024) – Five teams, all from Quebec, remain undefeated at the end of Day 1 of the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Flag Football Championship. The Université de Montréal, CÉGEP St-Laurent, Concordia University, Collège Montmorency and Collège Ahuntsic all ended the day with 2-0 records in the 16-team event at LaSalle’s Riverside Park.

In Pool A, Montreal got off to a perfect start with a 40-12 win over Western and followed that up with a 46-28 triumph over Champlain-St. Lambert. The Carabins were led by quarterback Sandrine Gobeil-Huot, who made a tournament-leading 13 touchdown passes. Cégep St-Laurent also won their first two games, as the Patriotes downed Champlain 36-12 and ended the day with a 34-26 win over Western. The Carabins and Patriotes are both through to the championship playoffs and will meet on Saturday to determine first place in the pool.

In Pool B, Concordia is alone at the top after wins over UQTR (34-0) and Regina – Yellow (56-26). Concordia’s offence got big contributions from Amelie Bentler, who caught four touchdowns, and Amy Deuel, who had two and four converts. The Cégep de l’Outaouais split their games, edging Regina-Yellow 28-27 before falling 38-25 to UQTR, who are also 1-1.

In Pool C, the only undefeated team is Montmorency, who shut out Guelph 33-0 and notched a 34-28 win over UQAM. The Citadins had previously beaten Regina-Green 34-14 and both teams sit at 1-1. The Green Cougars win was a 20-7 victory over Guelph, with Brenna Metz – who also plays for the Cougars women’s basketball team – scoring a pair of touchdowns and one-point conversions.

Pool D action saw Ahuntsic pick up two wins, as they downed Sherbrooke 33-24 and Saskatchewan 34-7. The Toronto Varsity Blues split their two games, with a 39-6 win over Saskatchewan offset by a tight 34-33 loss to Sherbrooke. Blues receiver Daniella Chung leads the tournament with 38 points, on six touchdowns and a pair of conversions.

Pool play concludes on Saturday, with games at 10:30 and 11:45 a.m. at Riverside Park. The top two teams in each pool will advance to the championship quarterfinals, with the bottom two in each pool heading to consolation quarterfinals. The championship semifinals are set for 5:45 p.m. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the bronze medal game set for 11:30 a.m. and the championship at 1 p.m.
