July 11th – REGINA, SK – Team Manitoba bounced back from their opening day loss with a hard-fought 23-6 victory over Nova Scotia in the second round of the 2024 Football Canada Cup on Wednesday, July 10, at Leibel Field in Regina, Saskatchewan.
The game unfolded as a defensive struggle for most of the contest, with each quarter presenting its own narrative:
Manitoba struck first with a single point on a 19-yard rouge by Rogan Vergata at 8:26. The quarter ended with Manitoba leading 1-0, as both defenses held firm.
The defensive battle continued, with Manitoba adding a safety at 6:50 to extend their lead to 3-0. Nova Scotia responded late in the quarter with a 31-yard field goal by Thatcher Manuel, tying the game 3-3 at halftime.
Nova Scotia took their first and only lead of the game at 5:03 with a 17-yard field goal by Thatcher Manuel, making it 6-3. Manitoba’s offense continued to struggle, failing to score in this quarter.
Manitoba’s offense finally came alive, scoring 20 unanswered points. Rogan Vergata connected with Nathan Esch for a 6-yard touchdown pass at 6:00, followed by another touchdown pass to Taylor Trosky at 10:19. Onan Furst capped off the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run at 11:46, sealing the 23-6 victory for Manitoba.
