New Brunswick edges Manitoba, securing a 12-7 victory and 5th place in the 2024 Football Canada Cup
July 14th – REGINA, SK – New Brunswick edged out Manitoba in a closely contested battle, securing a 12-7 victory in the final round of the 2024 Football Canada Cup on Saturday, July 13, at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan. This game determined the 5th and 6th place finishers in the tournament.
New Brunswick struck first with a 19-yard field goal by Santiago Vincent at 9:35 in the first quarter, taking an early 3-0 lead.
The second quarter saw no scoring from either team as defenses dominated play.
In the third quarter, New Brunswick extended their lead with a 32-yard field goal by Santiago Vincent at 4:24. Manitoba responded late in the quarter when Nathan Esch caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Rogan Vergata at 0:12, bringing the score to 6-7 in Manitoba’s favor.
New Brunswick regained the lead in the fourth quarter when Leo Foster scored on a 53-yard touchdown reception at 6:39. The successful convert brought the final score to 12-7 in New Brunswick’s favor.
New Brunswick’s offense slightly outgained Manitoba 230 yards to 227. Quarterback Hazen Rossiter completed 11 of 20 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. Noah Crowley led the ground attack with 60 yards on 15 carries.
Manitoba’s offense struggled to find consistency. Quarterback Rogan Vergata completed 14 of 30 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Onan Furst led their rushing efforts with 48 yards on 11 carries.
Defensively, New Brunswick was anchored by John O’Neal, who recorded 5 tackles and a special teams tackle. For Manitoba, Jesse Deneka led the defense with 8 tackles, 2 special teams tackles, and 6 assists.
This victory gives New Brunswick (2-1) a 5th place finish in the tournament, while Manitoba (1-2) secures 6th place.
