Ontario Red crowned U18 Women’s National Champions after dethroning defending champions Alberta 25-8
July 28, 2024, Fredericton, NB – In a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 U18 Women’s National Championship, Ontario Red dethroned defending champions Alberta with a hard-fought 25-8 victory at BMO Centre in Fredericton, NB, on Sunday evening.
The game was a showcase of high-level women’s football, with both teams demonstrating skill and determination. Ontario Red’s balanced attack and resilient defense proved to be the deciding factors in this championship match.
Alberta struck first when Sidanee Bowers returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. A safety early in the first quarter extended Alberta’s lead to 8-0. However, Ontario Red’s offense soon found its rhythm.
Quarterback Isabelle Berube connected with Tegan Roy for two long touchdown passes of 72 and 73 yards in the first and third quarters respectively. Liana Langiano added a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, giving Ontario Red a 19-8 lead heading into the fourth.
The final quarter saw Ontario Red seal their victory with a 2-yard touchdown run by Liana Langiano, bringing the final score to 25-8.
Isabelle Berube finished the game completing 10 of 17 passes for 241 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tegan Roy was her primary target, catching 8 passes for 232 yards and 2 touchdowns. On the ground, Liana Langiano led with 96 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
For Alberta, Sarah Fagnan put in a valiant effort, completing 6 of 20 passes for 72 yards and rushing for 116 yards on 15 carries.
Defensively, Favor Ebenki led Ontario Red with 8 solo tackles, 6 assists, and 2 sacks. For Alberta, Ruby Lastiwka stood out with 12 solo tackles, 5 assists, and 2
