Quebec heads to finals looking for three-peat

For the second consecutive year, Saskatchewan and Quebec met in the Canada Cup semi-finals with Saskatchewan looking to upset two-time defending champion, Quebec who were anxious to step into game action after receiving a first-round bye amongst the 2013 field of seven.

Early on Saskatchewan took advantage of Quebec’s slow start following their 1st round bye.

After a Daniel Scraper punt pinned Quebec at their 8-yard line, a Payton Hall pick-6 put Saskatchewan ahead at 8:09 of the 1st quarter.

Saskatchewan looked to continue reeking havoc on defense as linebacker Daniel Nesbit intercepted a Frédéric Paquette-Perrault pass however an off-sides penalty negated the turnover. The called back turnover was a turning point in the contest as Quebec began to seize back momentum as their drive continued, culminating with a 33-yard William Pettersen field goal to put la belle province on the board 6-3.

With 10 seconds to play in the opening quarter, Quebec took the lead and never looked back on a Mathieu Bouchard 2-yard quarterback keeper, giving Quebec a 10-6 lead. The score was set-up by a 25-yard quarterback keeper by fellow pivot Frédéric Paquette-Perrault.

Backed up on its goal line, Saskatchewan’s defense led by defensive lineman Eric Wicijowski minimized the damage, forcing a 10-yard Pettersen field goal which put Quebec ahead 13-6.

On the second play following the field goal, an Adam Auclair 65-yard pick-6 widened Quebec’s lead 20-6.

Quebec continued to pour it on, adding a touchdown from Paquette-Perraut to Marc-Antoine Pivin as well as a fourth Pettersen field goal to increase Quebec’s lead 33-6.

Late in the final quarter Saskatchewan linebacker Daniel Nesbit intercepted another Quebec pass, atoning for the one that had been called back in the 1st quarter.

A Samuel St Maurice 14-yard touchdown at 1:44 of the 4th quarter marked the game’s final score giving Quebec a 40-6 win.

With the win Quebec moves on to the gold medal final looking to capture their 3rd consecutive title where they will face Alberta for the 3rd year in a row. The gold medal game takes place on Sunday at 7:30pm (AT). Saskatchewan will face Ontario in the bronze medal game on Sunday at 4pm (AT).
