Québec wins a nail biter against Alberta, besting the prarie province 12-11 on the 2nd day of the 2024 Football Canada Cup

July 11th – REGINA, SK – Team Québec secured a nail-biting 12-11 victory over Alberta in the second round of the 2024 Football Canada Cup on Wednesday, July 10, at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The game was a defensive struggle throughout, with each quarter presenting its own narrative:

Alberta struck first with a safety by Joseph Abou Mechrek at 8:55 in the first quarter, taking a 2-0 lead. Neither team managed to add to the score for the remainder of the quarter.

Québec turned the tables in the second quarter when Louis Fortier connected with Olivier Dallaire for a 32-yard touchdown pass at 2:18. A safety by Québec’s defense at 3:33 extended their lead to 9-2. Alberta managed to add a single point on a 27-yard rouge by Ira Hozack at 11:20, making it 9-3 at halftime.

Alberta regained the lead in the third quarter with Seth Poelzer’s 6-yard touchdown run at 2:57, putting them ahead 10-9.

The final quarter saw Alberta extend their lead to 11-9 with a 47-yard rouge by Ira Hozack at 9:39. However, Québec mounted a dramatic last-minute drive, culminating in Tristan Charpentier’s game-winning 32-yard field goal as time expired, securing a 12-11 victory for Québec.

Québec’s offense outgained Alberta 296 yards to 251. Quarterback Louis Fortier completed 20 of 38 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown. His primary target was Olivier Dallaire, who caught 6 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Alberta’s offense was led by running back Seth Poelzer, who rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Quarterback Kohen Bohnet completed 8 of 22 passes for 97 yards.

Defensively, Québec was anchored by Sasha Durand, who recorded 7 tackles and an interception. For Alberta, Charles Beach led the way with 9 tackles.

The game was marred by penalties, with Alberta drawing 17 for 170 yards and Québec 18 for 155 yards.

This victory keeps Québec (2-0) undefeated and in strong contention for the championship, while Alberta (1-1) faces a crucial final game to determine their tournament standing.

The 2024 Football Canada Cup concludes with the final round of games on Saturday, July 13.
