2025 Football Canada Cup: Day 1 Recap
ANTIGONISH (July 14) — The 2025 Football Canada Cup kicked off with four lopsided wins, a pair of defensive clinics, and plenty of big plays at StFX Stadium. With every team now in action, the tone has been set, and the margins for error are already razor-thin
Alberta 52 – Manitoba 7
Alberta didn’t waste time making their presence felt, dropping 37 points in the first quarter and never looking back. Their defense scored twice in the opening frame, thanks to pick-sixes from Boucher and Thain Liptak, while Hyndman and Oboh each found the end zone on the ground.
Oboh finished with two touchdowns and over 100 all-purpose yards, while Hyndman added a rushing score and a passing TD to Thorpe. Manitoba got on the board late with a touchdown pass from Hosein to Templeton, but by then, the damage was long done.
Saskatchewan 42 – New Brunswick 0
Saskatchewan delivered the tournament’s first shutout, smothering New Brunswick from start to finish. The defence gave up just 57 total yards, forced a pair of safeties, and got a 70-yard interception return from Okulek.
Belsher hauled in two touchdowns and racked up 122 receiving yards, while Adams added a pair of rushing majors. Quarterbacks Bazarkiewicz and Newell combined for over 300 yards through the air in a game that was never close.
Quebec 52 – British Columbia 14
Quebec leaned on a relentless ground game to roll past British Columbia. Mari broke loose for 135 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80-yarder, while Codjo and Bombo added majors of their own behind a dominant offensive line.
Martineau threw a 34-yard touchdown to Boisvert, and the defense tacked on two safeties. BC showed some fight in the third quarter with touchdowns from Thurston, one rushing, one passing to Doucette, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Ontario 36 – Nova Scotia 8
The defending champs got the job done against the hosts, as Ontario controlled all four quarters in a 36–8 win over Nova Scotia. Buczek was sharp, throwing for 273 yards and two touchdowns to Lincoln, who topped 100 yards receiving.
Ontario added rushing scores from Petryk-Orr and Solomon, plus a late major from McCausland. Nova Scotia responded with a touchdown pass from Allison to Renner, but Ontario’s defense held firm, allowing just 31 yards on the ground and keeping the hosts in check.
