Central Canadians sweep semifinals, Maritime battle set for bronze

SACKVILLE, N.B. – The Football Canada Eastern U-16 Challenge will conclude on Sunday with Ontario and Quebec facing off in the Championship game. Both sides picked up victories in Thursday’s quarterfinals, sending Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to battle for bronze.

Sunday’s championship will be a rematch of the 2019 final, which was won by Quebec 28-7 over Ontario in Kingston. Quebec will be looking for their third straight championship, as they are a perfect 6-0 at the event.

The bronze medal game, between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, will mark the third time the two Maritime rivals have met, with Nova Scotia taking all three meetings, most recently a 35-9 win in the 2019 bronze-medal game.

On Thursday, Ontario opened proceedings with a 32-9 win over Nova Scotia. Ontario led throughout, taking a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and a 21-2 lead into the halftime break. After a scoreless third quarter, Nova Scotia found the end zone for the first time, to cut the lead to 12 points, but Ontario responded with the game’s final 11 points to seal the win.

In Thursday’s nightcap, Quebec scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and cruised to a 51-7 win over the hosts from New Brunswick. Quebec led 27-0 after one quarter, and 48-0 at halftime. In the second half, New Brunswick got on the board with a third-quarter touchdown, while Quebec’s only scoring was a late field goal.

Sunday’s medal games will kick off with the bronze medal game set for 4 p.m. (Atlantic) and the championship at 7.

All games will be streamed on the Football Canada YouTube channels. Follow Football Canada’s social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram for updates during the competition.
