Canada to compete for gold at flag worlds

by admin

Canada’s Men’s and Women’s Senior Flag Football National Teams have both progressed to Friday’s playoff round at the 2014 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Flag Football World Championships in Grosseto, Italy. The top eight teams in both the men’s and women’s draws qualified for the playoff round.

Women undefeated heading into playoffs

Canada’s women completed the two day round-robin with a perfect 6-0 record, finishing as the top team in their pool. On Wednesday, Canada sent a message to its competition after defeating 2012 champion Mexico and look to be in good position to medal in Italy. Canada opens Friday against Panama, the 4th place finisher from the opposing pool.

The women last competed in 2010 at home in Ottawa, capturing gold following a 3rd place finish at the 2008 World Championship in St-Jean, Quebec.

Men to face defending champions

Canada’s men finished round-robin play with a 5-2 record, third in their pool. Their pair of losses came at the hands of Denmark and USA — the respective bronze and silver medalists for 2012. Canada will face defending gold medalist, Austria to open their playoff round.

The team is looking to improve upon a 6th place finish from 2012. In 2010, the team narrowly missed out on a podium finish as the fell to Italy in the dying seconds of the bronze medal game in Ottawa.
