Team Canada QB Mason Nyhus Returns to the University of Saskatchewan as Assistant Head Coach and Passing Game Coordinator
Football Canada is proud to congratulate former Team Canada quarterback Mason Nyhus on his new role as Assistant Head Coach and Passing Game Coordinator with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Nyhus’s appointment marks an exciting chapter for the Huskies while offering an opportunity to celebrate his incredible journey representing Canada on the national and international stages.
A product of Regina, Saskatchewan, Nyhus has long been a standout athlete in Canadian football. This past year, he showcased his elite talent on the global stage as quarterback for Team Canada’s Flag Football program at the World Flag Football Championship in Lahti, Finland, Nyhus led Team Canada to a 7th place finish.
Nyhus’s contributions extended far beyond his well-documented statistics. As a leader, teammate, and competitor, he embodied the excellence and professionalism of Football Canada’s national programs. His ability to inspire those around him was evident throughout his Team Canada tenure, just as it had been during his celebrated career with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Nyhus’s football journey began with Team Saskatchewan, where he showcased his talents early in his career. He quarterbacked the province’s U18 team to a bronze medal finish at the 2015 Football Canada Cup in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, a performance that set the stage for his success at both the national and international levels. His leadership and poise on the field were evident from a young age, earning him recognition as one of the country’s top quarterback prospects.
A former Canada West Player of the Year, two-time All-Star, and 2022 Second Team All-Canadian, Nyhus set multiple program records with the Huskies, including career passing yards (9,649), completions (739), and touchdowns (66). His leadership was pivotal in the Huskies’ three Hardy Cup championships (2018, 2021, 2022) and their appearances in the Vanier Cup.
His time with Football Canada speaks to Nyhus’s continued commitment to growing football across the country. From quarterbacking Canada’s Junior National Team to a gold medal at the 2016 IFAF U19 World Championship, to his leadership in Team Canada’s Flag program, Mason has served as a role model for aspiring athletes from coast to coast.
“I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of so many Football Canada events including the 2015 Canada Cup, 2016 International Bowl, 2016 U19 World Championship, 2023 National Flag Football Championship, and the 2024 World Flag Football Championship,” said Mason. “I firmly believe that these positive experiences with great coaches, teammates, and friends have made me into a better player, coach, and person.”
Football Canada extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mason Nyhus on this exciting new chapter in his career. His achievements both on and off the field will continue to inspire future generations of Canadian athletes.
