WOMEN’s U-18 CHAMPIONSHIP: Alberta and Saskatchewan lead after day 1
Both squads go undefeated in first two games
REGINA – Saskatchewan and Alberta both sit atop the standings after the first day of the 2022 Football Canada Women’s Under-18 Championship at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Sunday.
The hosts posted a pair of identical 32-0 shutouts over Manitoba and New Brunswick as they went 2-0 in the first day of round-robin play at the five-team event. Alberta also won both their games on Day 1. Ontario sits in third place, having split its two contests, while Manitoba and New Brunswick are looking for their first victory. The round-robin portion is played using mini-games, with games consisting of two 12-minute periods.
Game 1: Saskatchewan 32, New Brunswick 0 | Box Score
Camryn Dubreuil scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the hosts to a shutout win over New Brunswick. She scored on runs of 25 and three yards, as the host province scored on all four of its first-period possessions to take a 26-0 halftime lead.
Dubreuil finished with 86 rushing yards on 12 carries, while teammate Shayden Magnus had eight carries for 117 yards and a touchdown. Jacey Goebel and Nevaeh Lang had the other Saskatchewan touchdowns, while a convert by Alyssa Sander rounded out the scoring.
For New Brunswick, quarterback Emma Lundrigan completed eight passes for 60 yards, and Alex Purdy led them defensively with seven tackles.
Saskatchewan racked up 292 yards of total offence, all via the rush, while New Brunswick picked up 69.
Game 2: Alberta 30, Ontario 1
Emily McMillan scored twice to lead Team Alberta to a 30-1 victory over Ontario. Her two majors, on runs of 55 and 36 yards, respectively, bookended the scoring in the first game of the competiton for both teams.
She rolled up 128 yards rushing on six carries, both game highs. Haylee Ketchum and Liberty-Jo Ware also found the end zone, while Ketchum added a pair of conversions. A safety touch for Alberta and a 39-yard punt single for Ontario’s Mya Lacombe rounded out the scoring.
Lacombe also led all Ontario rushers with 22 yards on three carries. On defence, Ella Gagnon of Alberta stood out with 5.5 tackles, including 3.5 for loss.
Game 3: Saskatchewan 32, Manitoba 0
Jacey Goebel and Shayden Magnus each scored a pair of touchdowns as the host province cruised to their second consecutive 32-0 win. Goebel scored on a 43-yard run and a 52-yard punt return, to put Saskatchewan up 12-0, while Magnus found the end zone on runs from 13 and four yards. A 33-yard run by Camryn Dubreuil, her third touchdown of the day, and conversions by Shaylee Dude and Shayden Magnus rounded out the scoring.
Dubreuil finished with 86 yards rushing on three carries, while Gobel had five carries for 62 yards and Magnus had nine for 59. For Manitoba, Caitlyn McMahon had 34 yards rushing on eight carries.
Abby Dunsworth led the hosts defensively, with 6.5 tackles, including a forced fumble, while Mary Grace Oluwadare led Manitoba with six stops. Chloe Spencer-Nairn blocked a convert attempt for the visitors, to go with 2.5 tackles.
Saskatchewan outgained Manitoba 226-50 and made 12 first downs to Manitoba’s three.
Game 4: Alberta 24, New Brunswick 0
Emily McMillan scored a pair of touchdowns to lead Alberta to the 24-0 shutout of New Brunswick. She scored on a two-yard run in the first period and a nine-yard scamper late in the second period, and now leads the tournament with four touchdowns. She finished with 82 rushing yards on six carries.
Mackenzie Morrell scored Alberta’s other touchdown, on a 60-yard run in the first period, while Haylee Ketchum made all three of her convert attempts.
Alexia Brazeau led New Brunswick with eight carries for 44 yards and added 2.5 tackles on defence.
Alberta outgained New Brunswick 211-86 in the game, and made 10 first downs to New Brunswick’s six.
Game 5: Ontario 25, Manitoba 16
Teagan Roy scored a pair of touchdowns for Ontario, as they eased past Manitoba to pick up their first win of the tournament. Roy scored on a 39-yard reception early in the first period and added a 32-yard catch early in the second.
Mya Lacombe added a first-half rushing touchdown for Ontario to put them up 13-0, but Jada Boulton replied for Manitoba on a 42-yard with 30 seconds left in the first period to cut their halftime deficit to 13-8.
After Roy’s second score put Ontario up by 11 points, Boulton scored her second touchdown of the game with 1:43 left to pull Manitoba to within three points at 19-16. However, there was to be no miracle comeback, and a 48-yard rush by Kamryn Szumlinski for Ontario with 27 seconds left put the game out of reach. She also scored Ontario’s only converstion, while Emily Ritchot made both of her conversion attempts for Manitoba.
Szumlinski posted a game-high 86 rushing yards on eight carries, while Boulton led Manitoba with 77 yards on the ground. Ontario quarterback Marie Sartorio threw for 103 yards including the two majors. All four of her completions were to Roy.
Hannah Martin made a tournament-high 10 tackles for Ontario, while Delainey Waldner led Manitoba with five stops and a pass broken up.

Round-robin play concludes on Wednesday, July 6 as Manitoba and Alberta kick the day off at 3:30 p.m. (Saskatchewan time) They will be followed by Ontario vs. Saskatchewan (5 p.m.), New Brunswick vs. Manitoba (6:30 p.m.), Alberta vs. Saskatchewan (8 p.m.) and New Brunswick vs. Ontario (9:30 p.m.).
The medal round on Saturday will start with a trio of mini-games to determine the bronze medallists, starting at 2 p.m. The championship game, which will be a full four-quarter contest, is set for 7 p.m., and will feature the top two teams from round-robin.
