2025 Football Canada Cup: Day 2 Recap
ANTIGONISH (July 17) — Day 2 of the Football Canada Cup turned the volume up across the board. All four matchups went down to the wire, with lead changes, late-game heroics, and momentum swings that lit up StFX Stadium.
Manitoba 27 – British Columbia 23
Manitoba clawed back from a halftime deficit to edge out BC in a tight contest that came down to the final minute. BC struck first with a pick-six from Lee and extended their lead to 16–10 at the half after touchdowns from Cooper and a field goal by Caya.
But Manitoba responded with 17 unanswered points in the second half. Hosein connected with Foster and later ran one in himself as the momentum swung. A third-quarter pick-six from Wenzel proved to be the difference, giving Manitoba a lead they wouldn’t surrender.
BC narrowed the gap with a late touchdown pass from Thurston to Krawchuk but couldn’t recover the onside kick. Manitoba ran out the clock and walked away with the win.
Alberta 34 – Quebec 27
Alberta punched their ticket to the gold medal game after holding off a late push from Quebec in a game loaded with momentum swings. Bohnet opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Grannum, then ran one in himself to make it 14–0 by the end of the first.
Quebec responded with 20 straight points in the second quarter, including two touchdowns from Mari and a 24-yard strike from Martineau to Boisvert to take a six-point lead into the break.
But Alberta flipped the script in the second half. Grannum’s second touchdown and a two-point conversion gave Alberta a slim lead, and after trading scores including a fourth touchdown pass by Bohnet to Piccinin, the defence came up with the game’s only turnover to seal it.
Ontario 41 – Saskatchewan 36
Ontario stayed perfect after surviving a wild back-and-forth against Saskatchewan. Buczek lit it up again, throwing for 310 yards and three touchdowns — two of them to Lincoln, who posted 151 yards on the day.
Saskatchewan nearly stole it with 22 fourth-quarter points, powered by touchdowns from Belsher, Adams, and a game-shifting pick-six from Okulek. But a late Ontario drive capped off by a Petryk-Orr touchdown gave the defending champs just enough to hang on.
New Brunswick 24 – Nova Scotia 17
New Brunswick edged out the hosts in a hard-fought nightcap under the lights. Foster was unstoppable, hauling in six passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Rossiter added a rushing score and Vincent nailed a clutch field goal to give NB the lead for good.
Nova Scotia responded through Allison, who found Renner for a pair of majors and added over 250 total yards himself. But a late defensive stand by New Brunswick closed the door and silenced the hometown crowd just as momentum seemed to swing.
