Football Canada Releases Updated 2025 Equipment Manager’s Handbook
Football Canada is proud to announce the release of the updated 2025 Equipment Manager’s Handbook, a modernized and comprehensive resource designed to support equipment managers across all levels of the game.
The handbook reflects the evolving standards of football in Canada, providing a unified knowledge base to guide best practices, strengthen equipment protocols, and ensure the continued safety and performance of athletes nationwide.
“I want to express my sincere thanks to the individuals whose professionalism, care, and expertise brought the 2025 Equipment Manager’s Handbook to life,” said Kevin McDonald, Executive Director of Football Canada. “This resource aims to establish a frame of reference and standards for those who serve in an equipment role with our membership across the country.”
The updated edition was shaped through the contributions of CFL Equipment Managers with a combined 150 years of experience working in Football:
George “Geo” Hopkins, Calgary Stampeders
Danny Webb, Toronto Argonauts
Brad Fotty, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Gordon Gilroy, Saskatchewan Roughriders
Drew Strohschein, Hamilton Tiger-Cats
A special acknowledgement is extended to Danny Webb, who not only contributed to this new edition but also played a role in the creation of the original 1984 manual.
The updated handbook also honours the foundation set by the original Purchasing and Maintenance of Football Equipment manual, developed by pioneers such as Ed Skirli, Robert Lowe, Dr. WM Morrison, Bob LaRose, Norm Fong, Al Ansell, Paul Blackman, Dr. Mark Aubrey, Tracey Taylor, Brian Gastaldi, Bob Walsh, and Bob Swan.
Additional thanks go to Alex Rhead and RJ James for their thoughtful review and refinement of the document, as well as former Football Canada staff member Joey Swarbrick, whose early involvement was crucial in shaping the handbook’s vision.
“There’s no question that equipment managers are at the heart of football operations,” added McDonald. “Their tireless work ensures athletes can perform at their best, both safely and confidently. This handbook is a reminder that the game only moves forward because of those who work tirelessly behind the scenes.”
The 2025 Equipment Manager’s Handbook is now available below Football Canada and serves as a critical resource for grassroots and high-performance programs alike.
