Ontario, Alberta finish on top at Women’s U18 National Tackle Championship 2023
July 30, Ottawa, ON – The 2023 edition of the Women’s U18 National Tackle Championship concluded on Saturday with outstanding divisional finals. The busy week in the Nation’s Capital wrapped up with Team Alberta and Team Ontario Black winning their way to their respective division titles.
The first gold medal game of the day, in the Cummings Division, had Team Manitoba face Team Ontario Black. The Ontarians took a slim one-score lead in the first half and never looked back, closing out the game with an 8-0 win. Ella Townsend (offensive) and Marissa Lowe (defensive) were the winners’ top performers, while Payton Turski (offensive) and Marygrace Oluwadare (defensive) were selected as Team Manitoba’s MVPs.
In the Harlow Division, Team Alberta and Team Québec were battling for the hardware. In this final game of the tournament, t was Team Alberta that jumped to an early edge, going into the half with a comfortable lead. Québec continued to push but their opponents from Alberta rushed to the victory with a final score of 52-22. Émilie Hubert (defensive) and Olivia Beaudry (offensive) were the standouts for Québec, and Kaley Boucher (defensive) and Rehema Holaki (offensive) were the winners’ best performers.
The last day of the competition had started with the Cummings Division consolation final between the National Indigenous Team and Team New Brunswick, Team NB completing their trip to Ottawa with a win 41-0 on the back of stellar performances by MVPs Alexia Brazeau (offensive) and Avelyn Bott (defensive). Talitah Liz Crowfoot Hendy (offensive) and Emery Fontaine (defensive) were selected as the National Indigenous Team’s most impactful players of the game.
The consolation final in the Harlow Division pitted Team Saskatchewan against Team Ontario Red, with Ontario securing the win 24-16. Shelby Norwood (defensive) and Marie Sartorio (offensive) stood out for the winners, while Rayna James (defensive) and Ella Schenher (offensive) offered MVP performances for Saskatchewan.
This marked the second edition of Football Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Championship. Seven provincial teams and the first National Indigenous Team gathered in Ottawa, ON, from July 21 to 29 for a thrilling showcase of tackle football featuring the top youth female players from across the country.
