Québec girls, Saskatchewan boys pull off one-point wins on way to U16 Flag National Championships

August 3, Antigonish, NS – The 2023 U16 Flag Football National Championships concluded on Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and teams pulled out all the moves in thrilling last-minute, one-point gold medal games in both girls’ and boys’ finals. Team Québec Blue (girls) and Team Saskatchewan Green (boys) were crowned 2023 champions.

Team Québec Blue earned their gold medal in the girls’ tournament after battling up to the last minute of the game in an incredibly tight match against Team Saskatchewan White, closing it out with a 19-18 win. Québec had secured their spot in the final by defeating Team Manitoba West 28-19 in the semi-finals, while Saskatchewan had bested Team Ontario East 25-6 to challenge them for the gold. Team Ontario East captured the bronze medal in a 21-7 win.

The boys’ tournament also wrapped up with a stellar one-point finish in the gold final between Team Saskatchewan Green and Team Nova Scotia Blue, squeezing by their host in a 37-36 championship win. Sask had advanced to the ultimate game by dispatching Team BC Orange 32-14 in the semis, while Team NS had punched their ticket to the final with a 32-20 win over Team Ontario White. Team Ontario White would go on to win the bronze medal in a close 33-27 win over BC.
