Quebec’s Subzero captures Women’s title; Saskatchewan’s Gamecocks Men’s champions
Both teams to represent the country as Team Canada at the 2024 IFAF Flag World Championships in Finland
July 2, Halifax, NS – Two new champions were crowned on Sunday at the 2023 Senior Flag Football Championships in Halifax, NS. Football Quebec Subzero (women’s) and Football Saskatchewan Gamecocks (men’s) captured the title and earned to honour to represent the country as Team Canada at the 2024 IFAF Flag World Championships that will be held in Finland.
Women’s Championship
The Women’s Championship, hotly disputed all weekend long, wrapped up with an equally enthralling final between two teams representing la belle province. Les Bleues who had maintained a perfect record up to the last match, secured spot in the big game by defeating North Sask in the semi-finals (26-6). Their opponent, Subzero, who despite a loss in their final group game had battled their way to the championship game by dispatching Team Ontario 1 in their semi-finals (27-13). The all-Quebec final was fiercely disputed, with a single point separating the runner-up from the gold-medal, Subzero winning the championship with a final score of 20-19.
Team Ontario and North Sask competed for the third position, the Ontario side comfortably grabbing the bronze medal (46-22).
Men’s Championship
The action concluded Sunday when Team Canada and the Gamecocks punched their tickets to the Men’s Championship. Team Canada secured their spot by defeating Team Ontario (40-21) in their semi-final match, while the Gamecocks had the better of First Class (46-20) to move on to the championship final. Ultimately, the Saskatchewan outfit delivered the better gameplan and collected the win (47-27) to grab the cup and 2023 title.
In the bronze medal game, Team Ontario outscored First Class to finish third.
