2023 Senior Flag Nationals Underway in Halifax, NS
June 30, Halifax, NS – Flag football championship season kicked off in style on Friday with day 1 of competition in the 2023 Senior Flag Football Nationals held at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, NS. Quebec teams had a successful first day on both sides, seeing two of its five women’s teams grab top spot in their pools, while one of their two men’s teams also collected two wins to start the weekend.
Women’s Championship
The 2023 Women’s Championship features 10 teams from across the country, divided in two pools of five. Pool A includes Team Ontario 1, Team BC, Montréal, Team Nova Scotia and the Subzero team, while pool B will see The Rock, Win or Spritz, Team Ontario 2, North Sask and Les Bleues battle it out.
Day 1 action in pool A saw Team Ontario 1, Montréal and Team BC each earn one win out of their first two games. It was however Quebec’s Subzero that started the tournament red hot securing two wins, first against Team BC (60-6), then over Montréal (31-13). Team Nova Scotia rounds up the pool and will look to change its luck on day 2 of the competition.
The other pool also saw three teams battle it out in the middle of the pack with a win each on the opening day – North Sask, Win or Spritz and Team Ontario 2 will go at it on day 2 looking to separate themselves from the rest. Les Bleues, from Football Québec, grabbed the top spot in the standings with early wins against Win or Spritz (48-19) and Team Ontario 2 (41-0). Their counterparts The Rock were not as fortunate, registering two losses, including a close 2-point one to kickoff the day, and are currently sitting last in their pool.
Canada Day will see action resume for the second day of pool play, with exciting matchups on the docket between Subzero and Team Ontario 1 in pool A, and Les Bleues against North Sask in pool B. The Women’s tournament day 2 begins at 9:00 am local time on fields 1, 2 and 4 at Saint Mary’s University.
Men’s Championship
The 2023 Men’s Championship also features 10 teams divided into two pools of five teams. Pool A will see Team Canada, Team Ontario, the Winnipeg Rebellion, the Ballers, and First Class battle it out, while pool B includes NS Elite, the Mooseheads, the Gamecocks, the Party Crashers, and Yeti’s.
It was all Team Canada and First Class on day 1 in pool A action, both securing two wins to start the championship. Team Canada earned a very close win (34-32) over the Winnipeg Rebellion in the morning, before dispatching the Ballers (34-29) later in the day. First Class also defeated the Winnipeg Rebellion to close out their day (31-20) after first having the best over Team Ontario (46-31) to start their quest for the title.
On the other side of the table, the Gamecocks grabbed top spot with two well-earned wins, first against NS Elite (39-32), and them over the Mooseheads (55-22) to close-out day 1 of competition. The Party Crashers and NS Elite also fought hard for every point possible in an unlikely tie game (26-26), leaving them in an uncomfortable but very manageable position in the group standings with a full day of games left before the placement games.
The Men’s competition will also resume at 9:00 am local time on Saturday, July 1st, with games being played all day, the final day 2 kickoff set for 3:40 pm in Halifax.
