Ontario headed back to the U16 Eastern Regional Challenge finals after beating host Nova Scotia 49-14

Antigonish, NS – July 19, 2024: Ontario secured a decisive 49-14 win over Nova Scotia in the second game of the 2024 U16 Eastern Regional Challenge at Oland Stadium in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

In the first quarter, Ontario’s running back David Nosa showcased his prowess with an impressive 21-yard rush. Nova Scotia’s defense, led by DB Jack Sangster, attempted to hold back Ontario, but a safety gave Ontario an early 2-0 lead. Ontario’s quarterback Benjamin Wickett then connected with wide receiver Brendan McCausland for a significant 31-yard pass, but the quarter would end 3-0 after a late rouge.

The second quarter saw Ontario’s offense continue to shine, with David Nosa making an electric 43-yard touchdown run, increasing Ontario’s lead. Nova Scotia’s quarterback Seth May responded by throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marlon Fletcher, narrowing the gap and keeping Nova Scotia in the game. However, Ontario retaliated swiftly with defensive back Keenan Brighton’s remarkable 91-yard kickoff return touchdown. Nova Scotia’s Fletcher answered back with an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The hotly contest half ended 18-14.

The third quarter saw Ontatrio put their foot on the gas, with running back Daniele Nicastro extending their lead with a 22-yard touchdown run early on. Despite multiple attempts, Nova Scotia struggled to gain momentum against Ontario’s relentless defense. Ontario’s linebacker Ty Taylor and defensive lineman Caleb Oehlke delivered standout performances, consistently pressuring Nova Scotia’s offense and preventing significant yardage gains.

The fourth quarter saw Ontario’s quarterback Benjamin Wickett connect with wide receiver Rylan Goffe-Lambert for a 44-yard touchdown. Ontario sealed their victory with David Nosa’s final touchdown run from 2 yards out, capping off an impressive offensive performance and solidifying his MVP status. Nova Scotia’s defense made several crucial tackles and showcased their resilience but couldn’t stop Ontario’s dominant offense.

Ontario beat Nova Scotia 49-14 and will head to the gold medal game against Québec on Sunday, July 21st, a rematch of last year’s final where Ontario seeks to claim the top spot. Nova Scotia will face off against New Brunswick for the bronze medal as well on July 21st.
