FCC2017 PREVIEW: British Columbia

by footballcanada

One of the major storylines from the 2017 Football Canada Cup is that British Columbia has come back into the fold.

They are a great bunch of kids that are excited to be back in the Football Canada Cup,” commented British Columbia Head Coach Cory Philpot of the team’s emotions about returning back to the tournament.

On the field, the team will bring their competitive spirit through their speed.

Offensively, British Columbia also have two strong quarterbacks in Michael Calvert and Josh Haydu. They will have multiple weapons to create some offensive magic with as running back Jalen Philpot as well as running backs Tyson Philpot, Colburn Pearce, Keelan White and Will Clarke will be viable options for them. Nick Giffen, Ethan Croome and Phil Grohovac anchors the line.

Tyler Eckert and Joe Nickel are expected to provide their experience and leadership to the defensive line. Other players highlighting the defence are linebacker Dylan Rachel as well as defensive backs Julien Perri and Jerrell Cummings.

“We’ve got a bunch of kids that have played together over the past three years together,” added Philpot about the defence. “They’ve been playing at different tournaments, playing together.”

British Columbia has the daunting task of facing the defending champions from Quebec on Saturday July 8th at 7:30pm AT. While the team knows it will be a tough game, they are making the most of the situation.

“We’ve learned lots about Quebec,” said Philpot. “They are the team to beat.”

“We know they are strong, fast, and big. They are going to be a challenge for us and we’re prepared for that. That’s what happens when you are the underdog and your back in something big.”

Overall, Philpot hopes this will be a rewarding experience for the players as they set out to achieve some feats.

“The goal for us is to come in and do the best we can,” he said. “Number 1 we want to win but our biggest goal is just to be able to come out there and show everyone that BC has tons of athletes here and that we can play football.”
