OTTAWA, June 7 – Football Canada is proud to announce Lethbridge, Alberta as host of the 2011 Football Canada Cup. The annual event showcases the top under-18 tackle football players representing their respective provinces. The event is tentatively set to run from July 9th to July 16th, 2011. Games will take place at the new state-of-the-art Community Sports Stadium located on the University of Lethbridge campus.

“It will be a great opportunity for the community to showcase our new Community Sports Stadium plus our abundance of volunteers and community energy that will surround the event,” says Kevin Kvame, Chair of the Sports Bid Committee. “It is a national event that builds upon our desire to be a sports tourism destination of choice.”

The 2011 Football Canada Cup is projected to draw approximately 400 players and coaches, along with as many as 1, 200 family members and fans from across Canada.

The Football Canada Cup was created in 1992 as an under-19 National Tackle Football Championship with the addition of the under-17 Championship created in 2004. In accordance with the Long Term Athlete Development Model and growth of football across the country the championship has shifted its focus to a new age category to support the player development that is taking place within the provinces. The 2010 National Under-18 event will be the first time in the event’s history that we will have representation from seven provinces at one time in one division.

The event has grown in recent years as 2010 marks the greatest number of provincial entries in Football Canada Cup history which includes two teams from Ontario, and one team each from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Québec and Nova Scotia. The 2011 event promises to showcase the tremendous amount of Canadian amateur football talent as well as to highlight the Lethbridge host community in Southern Alberta.
