Alberta defeats BC on the opening day of the 2024 U16 Western Challenge
Regina, Saskatchewan – July 3, 2024 – The U16 Western Challenge kicked off in Regina as teams from across Western Canada battle it out to see who is the best in the west. Host province, Saskatchewan, looks to defend their title in this annual showcase of young Canadian football talent, while Manitoba, BC, and Alberta all look to knock the prairie powerhouse off its throne.
Game 1: Alberta 28, British Columbia 7
Alberta opened their U16 Western Challenge campaign with a dominant 28-7 victory over British Columbia at Leibel Field, featuring an overall strong performance by Alberta on both sides of the ball.
Alberta started strong with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Owen Parker to Zachary Arlain, followed by a successful convert by Carter Millsap, giving them an early 7-0 lead. British Columbia responded with a touchdown of their own, tying the game at 7-7.
In the second quarter, Alberta took control with a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown extending their lead to 14-7 after another successful convert. Alberta’s defense continued to stifle British Columbia, and the first half ended with Alberta ahead.
The second half saw Alberta solidify their dominance. Matthew Delpeche scored on a 6-yard rush, increasing the lead to 21-7. Alberta’s final score came from a 6-yard rush in the fourth quarter, securing the victory with a final score of 28-7.
