Cayenne, Monarchs, and Vancity Vice all remain undefeated heading into the semi-finals

by Football Canada

KAMLOOPS (June 29, 2024) – The semi-finals are set for Sunday morning, with Cayenne set to take on Sweet Heat and the Monarchs will play Regina AFFL with a trip to the women’s finals on the line. On the men’s side, Vancity Vice will take on the Party Crashers and the Braves de Montreal will play Winnipeg for a chance to compete for the National Championship.

In the first women’s quarterfinal, Sweet Heat (2nd Pool A) took on their provincial foes the MVP Snipers (3rd Pool B) and Sweet Heat will represent Ontario in the semi-finals after winning 40-6. Kesia Alexander was a force on both sides of the ball, scoring three touchdowns and securing two interceptions.

Cayenne (1st Pool B) took down West Coast Reign (4th Pool A) by a score of 40-6 and set up a spicy matchup with Sweet Heat. With West Coast Reign looking to cut into the Cayenne lead, an interception in the end zone by Virginie Aubut-Ménard led to a Cayenne touchdown to put them up 20-0 near the end of the 1st half. Aubut-Ménard would intercept another one and return it for six in the second half.

On the other side of the bracket, EZ-E (2nd Pool B) played Regina AFFL (3rd Pool B) in a defensive battle. Regina came out on top 20-7 thanks to two touchdowns to Randi Debert and Brenna Metz converting the one point converts. Olga Huicochea would get EZ-E on the board with a touchdown pass to Stevi Schnoor, but the Regina defense held tough to secure the victory and a trip to the semi-finals.

After finishing 1st in Pool A, the Monarchs defeated BC Storm (4th Pool B) by a score 56-0 to advance to the semi-finals and set up another match-up with Regina AFFL. The Monarchs’ defense set their offense up for success early with a couple of interceptions early in the first half and BC Storm had no answer for the duo of Anne-Frédérique Tardif and Frédérique Morneau who scored four and three touchdowns respectively.

The Men’s division completed their round-robin play and Vancity Vice came out on top after finishing 5-0 and will take on the 4th seed Party Crashers (3-2) in the first semi-final. Vancity Vice defeated the Braves (3-2) 46-42 in a back-and-forth offensive battle to start the day and was led offensively by Lliam Wishart’s four receiving touchdowns in the game. Vancity Vice would then go on to defeat the Winnipeg Rebellion 38-18 and Gators 35-25 to remain undefeated. The Braves bounced back from their earlier loss by defeating Team Alberta 36-6 but fell to the Party Crashers 32-18 to end the day. The Party Crashers were led by four receiving touchdowns from Mendel Joseph and will look to ride this winning momentum into playoffs.

The Winnipeg Rebellion fought their way into the semi-finals with victories on Day 2 over the BC Gators 47-32 and Team Alberta 49-14. Liam Collier was a convert machine against Alberta (two 2-pt converts and two 1-pt converts) and hauled in another two touchdowns. James Teschuk continued his strong play by finishing the round robin with 7 receiving touchdowns for Winnipeg. The Party Crashers were in a dancing mood after victories over Team Alberta 46-33, BC Gators 40-6, and the Braves 32-18 which earned them a spot in the semi-finals. The perfect 2nd day led them into a three-way tie for second but dropped down to 4th due to tiebreaker procedures. Team Alberta and the BC Gators will have a re-match of their Friday night thriller, which Alberta snuck away with a close win. The BC Gators have shown their explosiveness with big plays from the likes of Dean Meurrens and CJ Augustine throughout the tournament and you know this young roster will be looking to come out victorious on the final day of tournament play.
