Football Canada Cancels Summer National Championships
OTTAWA, ON – Football Canada has cancelled its national flag and tackle championship events for the summer of 2021 due to ongoing limitations associated with the COVID-19 Pandemic. No specific event dates had been officially announced. The option of running national events at a later date will be evaluated on an ongoing basis.
Provinces that would have hosted national events in 2021 will be the first given opportunity to host in 2022. 2021 planned events/hosts were:
- Football Canada Cup – British Columbia Provincial Football Association
- Flag Nationals – Football PEI
- Under 18 Female Championship – Football Saskatchewan
- Canadian Flag Football League Nationals – Ontario Football Alliance.
- Women’s National Championship – Football Alberta
Football Canada is working with Provincial Sport Organizations to run regional events this summer. Participants should look to their respective provincial organizations for information on upcoming events. As they are confirmed, any scheduled events will be announced by Football Canada.
According to Football Canada Executive Director Shannon Donovan, provincial organizations are demonstrating maximum flexibility in response to the challenges presented by the Pandemic.
“Provincial Sport Organizations are continuing to think outside the box to find ways to get players back on the field while following provincial health and safety guidelines,” Donovan said.
“Regional events provide organizations the flexibility to plan games that adhere to provincial restrictions while creating opportunities for their athletes to compete.”
Football Canada and its member organizations are committed to helping the football community facilitate a safe return to the sport in the COVID-19 era.
