Football Canada and the Canadian National Women’s Tackle Team are proud to welcome Irving Oil as their major corporate sponsor in the team’s quest for gold at the 2010 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Women’s World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden on June 27-July 3.

Of the 45 players selected to play for Canada, 14 members are from Saint John, with 5 players and one assistant coach who are employees of Irving Oil. Irving Oil has a long tradition of supporting amateur sport throughout Atlantic Canada, and is especially proud to be supporting the Irving Oil employees as they strive for athletic excellence on the world stage. During the team’s 10 day stay in Stockholm, they will take on teams from the United States, Sweden, Austria, Germany, and Finland.

“This is a first, not only for Football Canada but also for each of these women as they represent Canada. We’re proud to support Canada’s top female football players as they compete in one of the most significant events in the history of women’s football,” said Carolyn Van der Veen, of Irving Oil. “We are particularly proud of the athletes among us – our six employees who will be participating, Ashlee Clements, Lisa Rogers, Trina Graves, Lisa Harlow, Jacqueline Brewer and assistant coach, Jim Mather. We all look forward to meeting the team when they arrive for the final training camp in Saint John in June, and will be cheering them on during the championship.“

“I’m extremely proud that my company has chosen to support our team. I see it as a reflection of Irving Oil’s long-standing commitment to the community and its employees.” says Lisa Rogers. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not only do I have the opportunity to represent my country at the National level for a sport I’ve become truly passionate about, but I’m also making history for women in sport.”

The public is invited to attend a team rally on June 22, 6:30pm at Shamrock Park in Milledgeville in the North End. Come watch Canada’s first-ever women’s tackle football team compete in a red and white scrimmage.

“I am very proud to have been chosen to lead Team Canada into the IFAF World Tournament. They players, coaches and sponsors are making history at this inaugural event. This program has evolved to a higher level with the strong support from Irving Oil.” Larry Harlow, Head Coach, National Women’s Tackle Team.
