MULLIN NAMED IFAF GENERAL SECRETARY
FOOTBALL CANADA PRESIDENT TO SIT ON INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION BOARD
OTTAWA – Jim Mullin, the president of Football Canada, was named General Secretary of the International Federation of American Football on Saturday at the association’s annual Congress, which was held virtually. Mullin was elected unopposed to a four-year term on the board of directors of the federation, the world governing body for gridiron football. The Bowen Island, B.C., resident, who has served as president of the national federation since 2019, will continue in his posts at Football Canada, while taking up the IFAF post starting on Dec. 13.
“In our strategic plan, Football Canada is missioned to provide a leadership role in global football, so this service is the next logical step,” Mullin said. “While my focus is centred on football in Canada, this will provide us the opportunity to find paths to assist in the global development of the game by sharing our programs, best practices, and ability to stage and host events with the world football community.”
As General Secretary, Mullin will be responsible for overseeing the development initiatives developed by IFAF, as well as managing the business of the body’s board of directors, ensuring the federation complies with its legal requirements, and ensuring that information flows both within the Board and between the Board and the federation’s Secretariat.
“I am delighted to have Jim by my side. His experience in the media world and the development of football Canada activities in recent years speak for him,” said Pierre Trochet of France, the incoming president of IFAF. “His advice and foresight will be precious in the coming months and years.”
Mullin’s appointment continues Canada’s strong involvement on the international level. In particular, Football Canada would like to recognize Richard MacLean of Halifax, a former president of Football Canada, whose term as IFAF President concluded at this year’s Congress, for his service to the organization and football worldwide.
Football Canada also congratulates the other members of the IFAF Board who were elected on Saturday, in addition to Trochet: Scott Hallenbeck (USA) – Vice President; Carl Michael Eschböck (Austria) – Director of Finance; Roope Noronen (Finland) – Director of Competitions; and Makoto Koshi (Japan) – Director of Development.
International play will return to Canada in 2024, as Edmonton hosts the 2024 World Junior Championship in tackle football, and Canada will be looking for their third straight gold medal at that event.
