WEST U-16’s ready for the challenge
Host B.C. looking for their first championship
OTTAWA – The Western U-16 Challenge gets underway this Sunday, as teams from the four western provinces will battle for regional bragging rights. The event will be held at McLeod Stadium in Langley, B.C., marking the second straight time that B.C. has hosted the event, after Kamloops in 2019.
The hosts will be looking for their first championship, after posting a fourth-place finish in 2017 and 2018 before winning the silver medal in 2019. As the second seed in this year’s event, they will play No. 3 Alberta at 7 p.m. (all times Pacific) in the semifinal. B.C. played Alberta in the 2019 semifinals, with B.C. posting a 26-21 win.
The defending champions, Saskatchewan, will take on No. 4-seeded Manitoba in the day’s first game, 4 p.m. Manitoba will be looking to avenge a 38-2 loss in the 2019 semifinals.
Alberta won the first two editions of the event and has posted a 6-1 overall record in the Challenge.
The medal games are set for Wednesday, July 6, with the bronze medal game set for 4 p.m. and the championship at 7.
