David Solie is a kicker from Saskatoon, Saskatoon who will represent Canada at the 2018 International Bowl in Arlington, Texas as a member of the National Under-19 team.
Spending his childhood playing soccer, the kicker made the transition to football in Grade 7, when he began playing at the peewee level.
“I ended up watching my brother and I got really interested in the sport so I decided I wanted to play football,” he recalled. “I dove in and I loved the contact, just kept going with it.”
During his career, Solie has played for Saskatoon Minor Football’s (SMF) Ledingham Steelers and the Holy Cross Crusaders of the Saskatchewan Secondary School Athletic Directorate (SSSAD).
Currently, the kicker is a member of Canada West Universities Athletic Association’s (CWUAA) University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
The kicker cites his brother as a main influence on and off the field.
“I grew up watching him and then in my Grade 10 year, I finally got to play with him again,” he reflected. “He’s been a really big role model.”
Legendary Crusaders’ Head Coach Scott Hundseth has been another source of support and inspiration.
“He’s had a huge impact on my life, not only as a coach but also as a teacher,” Solie added. “Just getting to know him, he’s always been there for me no matter what the situation was.”
“He’s really helped me along the way.”
With his selection to the National Under-19 team, it will be the second straight year Solie has represented Canada. Last year, he participated in the North American Championship in Florida which ranks as the highlight of his career.
“It was unforgettable,” expressed Solie, who was named MVP of the game last year. “Just being down there, not knowing many guys so you’re meeting new people, getting to know your teammates, not only on the field but also off the field too.”
“I made lots of friendships in different provinces across Canada. It’s probably one of the greatest times I had.”
Overjoyed to be heading down to Texas for the 2018 International Bowl, the kicker is fortunate, yet grateful to have a second chance to play for his country.
“It means a lot to me,” Solie expressed. “Growing up, you watch Team Canada hockey teams and you’re like ‘those people are representing our country’ and you are really proud for them.”
“It doesn’t just mean a lot to me, it means a lot to my family.”
