2010 Tom Cheney Award Recipient
This year’s deserving recipient, Jack Anderson of the New Brunswick Football Officials’ Association, was presented with this prestigious award at the CFOA Biennial Conference hosted in Winnipeg May 21-24 by the Manitoba Football Officials’ Association.
The Tom Cheney award is presented by Football Canada and the Canadian Football Official’ Association to a football official for “outstanding contribution and service toward the improvement of football officiating in Canada.” For information on past winners please go HERE
JACK ANDERSON
Jack played 3 years of High school football with the perennial provincial champion MonctonHigh School Purple Knights where he was and “ll conference” Offensive lineman. Upon graduation , Jack joined the Canadian Armed Forces (R.C.A.F) and upon his discharge joined the staff of Air Canada for some 35 years of service prior to his retirement in 2001.
Jack served as a coach in the Moncton football Association minor program for three years as well as being an active fund raiser for the association for some 25 years in additon to his role as an “onfield” official. As a result of this service , Jack was made aan Honourary Life Member of the Moncton Football Association.
In 1991, Football new Brunswick honoured jack with a Lifetime Service Award for 25 plus years of service to football in the province.
After recovering from a heart attack in 2001, Jack has continued to contribute to officiating in the Atlantic region. He still maintains a positive presence through “on field “ work, to a lesser degree than in previous years, and continues to donate much valuable time to the N.B.F.O.A. as an instructor, evaluator and mentor to fellow officials.
Jack has achieved much as an “onfield “official in that his level of excellence has resulted in his being assigned to numerous playoff games at all levels of amateur play in Canada including:
- Numerous Minor and High School playoff games in New Brunswick
- Eight AUFC Playoff games (Semifinal and Finals)
- Five Atlantic Uteck Bowls 1986,1991,1993,1997,1999
- Three Vanier Cups- 1998 (Head linesman), 1994 (Umpire) and 2000 Referee
As an educator, Jack has served as a national training(FCOCP) instuctor for levels one to four and has served on committees for the revision of the national training manuals for course conductors and students. Jack is also involved in the NBFOA mentor and evaluator programs. Jack served on the organizing committee for the 1984 CFOA confernce in Moncton. He is a regular presenter at weekly training session of the Moncton branch of the N.B.F.O.A
